The HPS approach was originally developed by the World Health Organisation. A HPS emphasises the role the community plays in helping schools promote and support physical, emotional and social well-being at school”.
HPS at Kaikohe West School has, through suggestions from students and parents, established filtered water for the children’s drinking fountains, extra shade areas, special soap hangers in the toilets and improved healthy lunches (receiving the bronze heartbeat award from the Heart Foundation in 2005).

READING PROGRAMMES
HPP (Hei Awhiawhi Tamariki ki te Panui Pukapuka)
HPP involves tutors talking about pictures in storybooks. The emphasis is placed on providing students with colourful and descriptive language prior to reading the book. Students are then encouraged to retell their stories in their own words. Some activities will involve rhyme. HPP in Te Reo Maori is also being developed for implementation.
This programme will involve spending 30 minutes with each student
Three times a week – all resources will be provided.
PPP (Pause, Prompt, Praise)
PPP involves tutors supporting students to become independent readers. Tutors will be trained to use pausing, prompting and praising strategies.
This programme will involve spending 20 minutes with each student three times a week – all resources will be provided.
